Companions don’t stay with Cal throughout the game.
Allies can appear on board the Mantis or, for example, in the cantina in Koboh.
By default, this is possible using the R1 square / RB X button combination.
You don’t have to heal your alliesor protect them.
They will manage without your support, so focus only on the protagonist’s health bar.
Companions can also help you with exploration and environmental puzzles.
Look around for interactive spots where R1/RB button icons appear.
